Where does Rush kneel, anyway?

Last week’s Newsweek seemed to sink deeper and deeper into my shoulder bag last week during my journey to greater Los Angeles. Thus, I am only now getting around to reading that cover story about the revolt in talk radio against GOP nominee-in-waiting (pending further New York Times review) Sen. John McCain.

Why object to female refs?

There’s been an odd little crisis brewing in the high school sports world of Kansas where a religious school refused to allow a referee who happens to be female to call the fouls in a boys’ high school basketball game. The reasons cited at the time by St. Mary’s Academy officials, which is about 25 miles northwest of Topeka, weren’t that clear, but it seemed to have something to do with the fact that they didn’t believe women should have authority over men.

Democrats and the "values" crowd

Your GetReligionistas do not pay much attention to the denominational press, but I still read or scan most of the coverage that comes out of those newsrooms. Every now and then you see quotes and information that you simply don’t see anywhere else. And sometimes, information from column (a) connects with information from column (b).

Overplaying the religion angle

Last week, the president of The College of William & Mary resigned abruptly after he found out his contract wasn’t going to be renewed later this year. President Gene Nichol, a former administrator at my alma mater, had been in the news for a couple of decisions he made. One was removing a cross from the campus’ historic Wren Chapel. Another was permitting a traveling show of sex workers to visit the campus. William & Mary is a public university of the Commonwealth of Virginia, it should be noted.

Ignoring the faith factor

My local congressional district has a special election in a couple of weeks to fill the House seat vacated by the late Rep. Julia Carson, D-Ind. You wouldn’t know it from reading our local newspaper The Indianapolis Star, but the Democratic candidate for the seat, Carson’s grandson Andre Carson, could become the nation’s second Muslim member of Congress.

Strange style twist of the day

The Los Angeles Times has a pretty off-the-rack news feature in print today about the Rev. Mike Huckabee and his ongoing “miracles happen” campaign for president, vice president, syndicated talk-show host, Rolling Stones bass player or whatever.
