A Mormon thumbsucker

A while back, one of my colleagues — who, as it happens, has written some pretty terrific things on the subject of religion — asked me if I was familiar with the writer Walter Kirn. Knowing that we were both ex-Mormons and Kirn often wrote about religious themes, he wondered what I thought of Kirn’s work. I spent a lot of time in the creative writing department as an undergrad in the mid-late 90s just as Kirn’s career as a novelist was taking off, and he’d been recommended to me several times though I’d never gotten around to exploring any of his books. (More recently, you might be aware that his book Up in the Air had been made into the eponymous and rather acclaimed movie.)

So, is Jeremy Lin a good fit in New York City?

It’s pretty clear, at this point, that New York Jets quarterback Tim Tebow has become, in the words of The New York Daily News, an “evangelical Christian icon.” It is hard to discuss his fanatical popularity in the heartland of America — think NFL jersey sales — without taking into account this aspect of his life and personality.

That faith-free Times piece on single moms

It’s time for a simple poll question: OK, GetReligion readers, raise your hand if you think there is a moral and, in this culture, religious element present in most discussions of (a) sex outside of marriage, (b) cohabitation, (c) having children outside of wedlock and (d) all of the above?

Germany's circumcision ruling makes believers anxious

A few weeks ago I started reading stories about how Germany had banned circumcision. Because of Germany’s historical treatment of Jews, and what that country has gone through to rid itself of its past, the story almost seemed hard to believe. But it was real and there was limited coverage of the move.

Generic nuns in Baltimore decline, sell property

I think we have pretty much established, at this point, that the folks who run The Baltimore Sun may be interested in some (but not all) Catholic events and trends in their historically significant city. However, it is also true that they appear to have zero interest, or thereabouts, in asking WHY certain events and trends are so common in Catholic life.

Bloomberg Businessweek's Mormon moment fail

I am certainly not the first to note this, so let’s all say this together: What were the editors at Bloomberg Businessweek thinking? Basically, its cover story about the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’ finances could offend just about anyone who practices just about any kind of faith.

Rum, sodomy and the cash: The Episcopal Church 2012

The Wall Street Journal’s “Houses of Worship” column has printed a spirited review of the recent General Convention of the Episcopal Church held 5-12 July 2012 in Indianapolis. The reporter’s style in “What Ails the Episcopalians” is engaging as is the ebullient energy found in his report on the church’s follies.
