Culture wars in Africa (specifically, Kenya)

Recently I asked a woman from Nigeria what she thought of the media’s coverage of her country. She said what frustrated her most was when reporters gave sweeping statements or connected African countries as though it were one uniform nation. I thought of our conversation when I read a recent New York Times piece on Kenya’s culture wars. Stay with me as we read these first few paragraphs.

Sexual sin vs. "misplaced" words

Earlier this week we saw two sad stories involving political figures. It turned out that the Democratic nominee to be the next Connecticut Senator, Richard Blumenthal, had lied (or “misplaced” his words, as he put it) about whether he’d served in Vietnam. My investigation confirmed that the pastor — who claimed to be a leading expert on Islam — really was not.

Things may get hot for Miss USA

To tell you the truth, I don’t think there is much to be gained by GetReligion readers if we dwell on the media frenzy surrounding the photos of Rima Fakih dancing in a 2007 pole-dancing contest sponsored by Mojointhemorning.com, a morning show on Channel 955 in Detroit. This update does sound a but ominous, however:
