The terrible story out of China of a toddler run over by a van as she wandered alone through a market has seen extensive news coverage. As two-year old Yue Yue lay in the street badly injured, a security camera recorded 18 people passing by before a woman stopped to help. There has been an outpouring of outrage on blogs and social media, some of it prompted by the passers-by making excuses for their behavior.
Got news? Holy Mary gets smashed
Here we go again. In the past few days I have received a mini-wave of emails asking why GetReligion hasn’t commented on the mainstream news media’s alleged refusal to cover some of the controversial religion and anti-religion stories linked to the whole “occupy” movement.
Holy Cow Batman, The Guardian on Hinduism
Ghost in the alleged Iranian spy plot
One of the complaints your GetReligionistas hear the most is that we spend too much time complaining about the same old things. Why can’t we just understand that the stupid and/or enlightened members of our mainstream media are never going to do W or X or stop doing Y and Z and just move on?
Depicting Steve Jobs in the afterlife
Within about five minutes of reading about Steve Jobs’ death, a friend texted me, “Get ready for all the overreaction about Steve Jobs, who was obviously dying for years.” It’s also interesting (but not surprising) to see how quickly Gawker would publish a post “What Everyone Is Too Polite to Say About Steve Jobs.” How soon is too soon to start critiquing someone’s life after their death?
Time to nix 'sectarian' in Egyptian reports
At this point, I am getting very tired of the word “sectarian” in reports from the fiery streets of Cairo.
Steve Jobs, Apple founder, dies
We may have anticipated the news but it’s still such a shock to read about Apple founder Steve Jobs’ death, likely from pancreatic cancer. Many of us first read or heard the news on Apple products. I write this on my iMac with two iPhones, an iPad and two Macbooks nearby. And I’m not even one of those Mac evangelists. I just really like the design and function of the products.
Got news: Pastor Youcef gets some ink
We have had some fascinating comments about my recent posts (here and here) noting the lack of mainstream media coverage of the Iranian proceedings against Pastor Youcef Nadarkhani — who was accused of apostasy for converting to Christianity, even though he had never practiced Islam after coming of age.
Got news? Clock ticking louder in Iran
I’m still using Google News to search for mainstream news media reports on the fate of the Iranian pastor who faces the death penalty for being a Muslim apostate, even though he has never practice Islam.
