It was clear, this weekend, that the major West Coast newspapers didn’t expect the controversial (yes, I used that word deliberately) artist Thomas Kinkade to die at 54 years of age. Thus, the newsrooms did not have pre-written obituaries about the self-proclaimed “painter of light” ready to update and publish.
That Tim Tebow guy is something else. You would think with all of the New York City media following him around these days, that it would be hard for him to sneak off and make some kind of radical change in his religious life.
As the Divine Mrs. M.Z. has already noted, this is a red-letter news day on the religion-and-baseball beat. This is especially true here in Baltimore, where our city’s beleaguered Orioles fans are marking the 20th anniversary of the opening of Orioles Park at Camden Yards, the park that in many ways saved baseball from suburbia.
Like millions of other Americans, I have read “The Hunger Games” trilogy. I also queued up with much of the world’s population and trekked off to the theater, with a bit of trepidation (violent movies are not my thing), to see the first movie in this new mega-franchise.
First, a disclaimer: I expect that the following post will draw one or more comments that state the following theme, or variations on it: “The problem with this post is that this news story really isn’t an example of journalists failing to ‘get religion.’ This is just a messed up story. Period.”
