Believe it or not, I don’t have a whole lot to say about the mini-media flap about President-elect Barack Obama’s decision to ask his best evangelical buddy, that would be the Rev. Rick Warren, to offer the invocation on Jan. 20. Just imagine what the coverage will be like if Warren utters the J-word or prays that American will work for justice for all, born and unborn or something like that.
Last week the Vatican issued a document on bioethics called “The Dignity of a Person” that was covered fairly extensively by the mainstream media. Considering what coverage of Vatican statements and documents is normally like, the coverage was actually not bad. But it wasn’t perfect.
Your Getreligionistas have heard from several readers who want to know what we think of the mainstream media coverage of that fire — it was arson — that gutted the Wasilla Bible Church up in Alaska. In case you have been off the planet for several months, that is the home church of an outspoken evangelical woman by the name of Sarah Palin.
I find it absolutely amazing that the Washington Post would react to the cover story published by its sister magazine Newsweek by running the story in its Saturday editions.

Ah, December — the month of office parties, hearing “Jingle Bell Rock” in airports and reading incessant Top 10 lists. Time is ahead of the pack this year, rolling out 50 lists, and David Van Biema does the honors on the year’s top religion stories.
Earlier this week, rumors began circulating about a major drop in circulation for Newsweek. Some were suggesting a drop from a rate base of 2.6 million to 1 million. A rate base, by the way, is the circulation you guarantee to advertisers.
