The journalistic equation goes something like this.
Cuddly baby and a court case
(Wink) Gingrich and religious right (wink)
Unless I am reading the tea leaves wrong, we have not seen the end of the stories probing whether the once Honorable Newt Gingrich has adequately repented for his moral failures as a husband. The theme that keeps driving this subject into the headlines is, of course, his ongoing attempts to court the votes of evangelicals and other moral conservatives (with traditional Catholics being a crucial piece of that puzzle).
Textbook example of balanced reporting
Too often when those two forces collide, a train wreck demanding GetReligion attention of the negative kind occurs (examples here, here and here).
NYTimes struggles to label Eddie Long
Before we examine a slice or two of this recent New York Times piece about Bishop Eddie L. Long, I feel the need to ask a few basic questions about this troubled church leader’s theology.
Newt, Newsweek, evangelicals & Rome
Before we get to one of the Beltway issues of day — the surging Newt Gingrich and the evangelicals of Iowa — I have a question for GetReligion readers who are, or have been, Newsweek subscribers in recent years.
Stereotypes and backwoods religion
At first glance, I had high hopes for a CNN story out today with the headline “Pastor fights HIV stigma in Southern town.”
Media discovers Mormon views on sex
I’m going to break some news to you. It’s very difficult and you’ve probably never heard about it. Certainly the Washington Post hasn’t.
Teaching 'good sex' in the classroom
It’s nice to see Rod Dreher blogging away again this fall, especially since he kind of wrote a GetReligion post for us. In a recent post, he argued that the New York Times Magazine is obsessed with sex and sexuality, especially from a progressive/liberation angle. As he points out, here are a few of the sex-related stories theyâve done this year (with links to some GetReligion responses).
