With books like “Heaven is for Real” on the New York Times bestseller list, it’s no wonder reporters might gravitate toward stories of death, resurrection, heaven and everything else that touches the topic. Google Doodle pick got religion, dumped science?
Did you use Google today? Perhaps you noticed the Doodle in honor of 17th century scientist Nicolas Steno, a pioneer in both anatomy and geology. Google often honors scientists, authors and inventors with its occasional homepage art, but what’s interesting about this one is the religious side to Steno’s life. The Los Angeles Times notes the scientist’s shift to more religious priorities in a rather abrupt way.

An experienced author knows the interests and quirks of the publications to whom he markets his work. In addition to the question of content — no poultry breeding articles for Car & Driver — an author must be conversant with the style sense and audience of an outlet. Do they like it hip or heavy? AP or Times of London style book? The definitive New Yorker treatment or a People magazine popular summary?
