The New York Times has an extraordinary article that extols the virtues of lying and doublespeak in a recent “Memo from Jerusalem.” Well, you might ask, what of it? How does a dodgy story on the Arab-Israeli conflict fall within the ambit of GetReligion? What is the religion/journalism hook you ask?
Why Callista Gingrich can sing
At most schools (high school or college) there are band types, athletes, drama people, book fanatics, math/science geeks (and proud of it), etc., etc. Sometimes, these groups can overlap, such as the common book/band hybrid or the choir/drama type. I was a book/choir guy.
Bible bans and 'Muslim' boycotts
I just read my eleventy billionth story on the controversy surrounding the show All-American Muslim. You’ve likely heard about the controversy. You’ve not likely seen the show, according to the Hollywood Reporter:
In memoriam: Vaclav Havel
A GetReligion reader wrote in with a special request for a look at the media coverage of Vaclav Havel. Havel is a hero of mine and I’d been intending to write something on the media coverage, sort of waiting for that perfect article. Which is never coming.
Speaking Kim Jong-il of the dead
What a week in deaths. We already talked about Christopher Hitchens. On Sunday, we learned that the great Czech playwright, revolutionary and president Vaclav Havel died.
Haunted Christmas in the public square
It’s “War on Christmas” time again in the public square and, thus, in our newspapers from sea to shining sea. Rejoice, all ye lawyers.
Is candidate Rick Santorum an "evangelist"?
The first word that a journalist needs to think of when writing about former Sen. Rick Santorum is “conservative” and the second is “Catholic.”
Mitt Romney's not-so-secret elves
It’s no secret that David and Nancy French have been supporters of Mitt Romney and want other evangelicals to join with them. They even built a website in 2006 around the idea. Time magazine just discovered the couple, though, and they want you to know about it.
(Wink) Gingrich and religious right (wink)
Unless I am reading the tea leaves wrong, we have not seen the end of the stories probing whether the once Honorable Newt Gingrich has adequately repented for his moral failures as a husband. The theme that keeps driving this subject into the headlines is, of course, his ongoing attempts to court the votes of evangelicals and other moral conservatives (with traditional Catholics being a crucial piece of that puzzle).
