God saves Raven's life; gets a few lines of ink

Another day, another story about God and the National Football League. This week, in the midst of its purple-and-black playoff blitz, The Baltimore Sun recently offered a look at the young life of Ravens cornerback Cary Williams, who had a very troubled decade or two before turning things around with a little help, apparently, from God and a good church.

Google Doodle pick got religion, dumped science?

Did you use Google today? Perhaps you noticed the Doodle in honor of 17th century scientist Nicolas Steno, a pioneer in both anatomy and geology. Google often honors scientists, authors and inventors with its occasional homepage art, but what’s interesting about this one is the religious side to Steno’s life. The Los Angeles Times notes the scientist’s shift to more religious priorities in a rather abrupt way.

When I read Bible Belt Bobby’s post about the journalistic virtue called “attribution” I was reminded of a controversial West Coast story that I have been trying to get around to for several days. I refer to the recent resignation of Bishop Gabino Zavala as auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles.

Pope Benedict XVI named 22 new cardinals today, forming the “electoral college” that picks the next pope. John Allen offers general observations on the announcement, but he and other reporters are especially zeroing in on Archbishop Timothy Dolan of New York, who was elected president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops last year.

One of my family members devours biographies, a genre not known for tantalizing your average middle-aged woman. When I asked her why she loves them, she insists that the stories are better than fiction, that because they are true, they are much more interesting.
