When I think of a classic example of a mainstream news story that is in urgent need of GetReligion treatment, the opening goes something like this:
Party over for the Party faithful?
After the 2004 election, the media freakout included claims that Christian conservatives were trying to turn the country into a theocracy or something. But liberal lions such as Sen. Ted Kennedy wondered whether Democrats could do a better job of reaching out to religious voters. And thus began key years of hard and effective work by Democrats. Data gathered during the 2006 and 2008 election showed that Democrats made tremendous gains in appealing to religious voters.
Noah's Ark of the Covenant?
GetReligion contributor Sarah Pulliam used to be my favorite Wheaton College graduate. My new favorite graduate is horror film director Wes Craven. I had no idea he’d gone to the school until I read this Associated Press story about journalist Ann Curry’s embarrassing mistake giving a commencement address last weekend:
Revisiting the Church of Baseball
Washington Nationals fans are having a great time right now. I know it’s only May, but the team has an above .500 record and locals are elated. Last year they ended the season with the worst average in baseball: .364. And the most exciting news is related to pitching phenom Stephen Strasburg. He’s expected to make his Major League Debut here pretty soon and, well, let’s just say I’ve already bought my tickets.
Sex and the City and other faith flicks
One of the worst movie experiences of my life was watching Sex and the City. I know it was a big hit but the whole thing just annoyed me. And not just because of the jokes about losing control of one’s bowels. Certainly the moral message of the film didn’t sit well with me either. It’s not like I’m a snobby consumer of entertainment. I was an enthusiastic watcher of the HBO series. (I know, I know.)
And now for the rest of the story
So the Detroit Free Press has a huge article about the Apostolic Visitation of women religious orders here in the United States. What’s that? Well, a year or two ago, the Vatican’s Congregation for Religious ordered a review of the Leadership Conference of Women Religious. That’s the group recently in the news for being involved in the 11th hour endorsement of health care legislation.
Speaking in tongues
Today is one of my favorite Christian holidays — Pentecost. My youngest was baptized last year on this feast day and we just got home from a beautiful service at our church.
When headlines attack
The New York Times media reporter David Carr had a fun piece this week about how headlines have changed in the internet age.
Everybody draw Muhammad Day
May 20 is “Everybody Draw Muhammad Day.” We looked at coverage of this event a month ago. It was the brainchild of an illustrator upset at Comedy Central’s censorship of the South Park show. South Park, which has depicted the Prophet Muhammad in the past to no criticism, was pretending to depict Muhammad again. Comedy Central fearful of Muslim violence, blocked the pretend depictions and censored previous shows.
