Earlier this week Media Matters for America issued a report that claims religious conservatives are overrepresented in the media. The liberal group is “dedicated to comprehensively monitoring, analyzing, and correcting conservative misinformation in the U.S. media.” Though they come from a different perspective, they share some similarities with the conservative Media Research Center. And they do an excellent job of exposing gaffes made by anyone who’s not progressive, including Bill O’Reilly and Pat Robertson.
This just in: Burke not Episcopalian
Washington Post reporter Peter Slevin vented on St. Louis Roman Catholic Archbishop Raymond Burke in this diatribe news article published today.
New tactics? Or new to the Times?
I don’t know why so many reporters are covering abortion-related topics these days, but we have the opportunity to look at yet another article in the genre. In this case Robin Toner of The New York Times wrote about the “new tactic” of pro-lifers seeming to care about women’s well-being. The headline is “Abortion Foes See Validation for New Tactic.”
When headlines and copy collide
Last week ABC News’ Jake Tapper and Matt Stuart interviewed Mitt Romney, candidate for the Republican nomination for president. Their subsequent article dealt with his views on immigration and abortion — but also a bit about his views on whether it’s his job to respond to theological opposition to Mormonism.
We call it 'selective reduction'
In recent weeks we’ve seen a couple of really good articles about the ethics and values of abortion supporters. Liza Mundy, a staff writer for The Washington Post Magazine, had another excellent entry that relates to the topic with her Sunday piece on women pregnant with more than one fetus who wish they had fewer.
Trust me -- I'm a reporter
One of the things I wish more reporters had the opportunity to do is be interviewed by other reporters. I’ve had my share of experiences being on the other end of the pad and pen. In some cases, the reporter is thorough and takes the time to really understand what you are saying. I’ve also been misquoted, which is an absolutely horrifying experience. In one case, I was misquoted to say the opposite of what I was actually saying. I called the reporter to complain and she yelled at me. I mean, really!
When choice and diversity collide
It was just a week ago that we looked at New York Times reporter Amy Harmon’s story on genetic testing of fetuses. She wrote that some parents of children with Down syndrome are lobbying other parents not to abort their children with Down syndrome. The story, which was very well done, left me hungry for more coverage of genetic testing issues.
She blinded me with history
Newsweek‘s Lisa Miller wrote an article for the May 21 issue that looks at the new book on Jesus by Pope Benedict XVI. Newsweek apparently had an exclusive excerpt of the book and Miller did an article about the book’s meaning, a portion of which dealt with Jesus’ baptism:
Just wait until tomorrow!
The New York Times has had some confusing coverage of the Muslim men who were charged with plotting to attack New Jersey’s Fort Dix in a terror plot. Let’s take a look.
