One of the most important things for reporters to do when covering a new study is to read the study and the supporting documents. There was a particularly good recent example of what happens when reporters don’t do that.
Does Ramadan only affect Muslim athletes?
Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, began Thursday evening and lasts for a month. During the month, participating Muslims refrain from eating or drinking during daylight hours. Muslims believe Ramadan was the month during which the first verses of the Koran were revealed to the Islamic prophet Mohammed. The month is based on the Islamic lunar calendar and moves back about 11 days each year.
Byzantine accusations, jammed into a bad headline
The Byzantine drama linked to the removal of Metropolitan JONAH as the leader of the Orthodox Church in America continues to unfold online, even though there has been little information revealed that has not been the subject of rumors and debates for quite some time.

French Evangelicals through an American lens
A mixed review is the best I can give to an article in the Christian Science Monitor on the rise of Evangelical Christianity in France. The 1400-word article entitled “In a France suspicious of religion, evangelicalism’s message strikes a chord” tells a fascinating story about the changing religious landscape in France, but for every two steps forward it makes in its narrative, it takes a step back with its assumptions. It’s a “yes, but …” article. A stronger editorial pencil would have made it great.
So, is Jeremy Lin a good fit in New York City?
It’s pretty clear, at this point, that New York Jets quarterback Tim Tebow has become, in the words of The New York Daily News, an “evangelical Christian icon.” It is hard to discuss his fanatical popularity in the heartland of America — think NFL jersey sales — without taking into account this aspect of his life and personality.
Three cheers for the Church of England!
Ghosts in the 'God particle'
Back in December, I highlighted a story about how scientists really don’t like the terminology of “God particle” to describe a theoretical subatomic particle called the Higgs boson. But the battle seems to be lost and reporters know that “God particle” is so much sexier than Higgs boson. Last week physicists in Switzerland said they would soon prove the particleâs existence and we saw another round of stories using the terminology.
What's wrong with Liberation Theology?
Liberal Catholics have scored a major coup at the Vatican, the Guardian reports as a defender of âliberation theologistsâ and former student of Gustavo Gutiérrez has been appointed head of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith at the Vatican.
