Religion Dispatches, a progressive blog for religion news and analysis, has a post about President Barack Obama’s newly appointed religion ambassador. The headline sums up the story very well:
Manute Bol: Tall tower of faith
If you dig around on the Washington Post site you can find the following weblog post that quotes a U.S. Senate tribute by Sen. Sam Brownback to the late Manute Bol of Sudan, who, at 7-foot-7, with a fingertip-to-fingertip wingspan of 8-feet-6, was one of the most unusual athletes to ever play in the National Basketball Association.
The problem with breaking news
Breaking news coverage is very difficult. The moment when people most desire updates coincides with the moment when a news outlet knows the least on the given topic.
Narco-thugs for Jesus (no not that One)
There are so many positive things that I want to say about the gripping Time news feature that ran under the following double-decker headline: “Mexico’s Meth Warriors: Fueled by Evangelical zeal and America’s appetite for meth, a provincial Mexican gang breaks into the big time.”
Is it Saint Swithin's Day Already?
So there’s a new movie coming out about the legendary (and I do mean legendary) female Pope of the 9th Century — Joan. It’s the job of movie directors to use good stories rather than tell accurate accounts of history. But we should expect more accuracy in media coverage. Let’s see how it’s going.
Putting the sol in solstice
A reader sent in a poor example of how to cover a major Pagan holiday — the Summer Solstice. The Telegraph devoted only a few words to how the festival was celebrated at Stonehenge:
With God on our (football) side
So if American football is almost a religion, especially on the high holiday called the Super Bowl, what does that make the real thing, the real sport that is played with the feet? If the World Cup isn’t a religious event — in terms of civil religion, sociology and global myth — then I would be hard pressed to find on.
This is not a post about a real angel
Wow, what a day. To tell you the truth, I went straight into meetings immediately after I arrived at work and I have been swamped every since. Now, I am involved in family stuff (hey, a wedding looms in the very near future) and that’s going to tie me up all evening.
A real mission from God?
There’s no question that the Blues Brothers is a great movie, what with the car chases, Nazis getting their comeuppance and the incomparable Aretha Franklin.
