New Yorker on Christian hipsters

Let me be clear: I am not a hipster. I’ve had black-rim glasses since junior year of high school (12 years) and a beard for almost as long (off and on). But I am a Christian and I have had Christian hipster friends for the past decade, so Brett McCracken’s new book, “Hipster Christianity,” appeals to me.

Every now and then, news coverage of a topic or an idea gets into the digital bloodstream and simply, as the popular saying puts it, “goes viral.” It really helps if the story is given a punch headline that causes lots of people to click “comment” or to post notes on Facebook. You know the game.

Twilight of the Mormons

The smartest piece I’ve read so far about the Twilight phenomenon, was Caitlin Flanagan’s essay for The Atlantic. To date, I haven’t read the books or seen the movies, but my Mormon upbringing has made me somewhat attuned to a subject that otherwise is primarily of interest to adolescent females. LATimes: Wooden was faithful, but to what?

So, the Los Angeles Times has published its giant salute to the life and times of John Wooden and, unless I have missed something, the bottom line is that he was an amazingly nice man of sterling integrity and a sense of honor and values that came from the American heartland.
