Time for a confession: I am not so bothered, as a matter of journalism, by Jon Meacham’s two recent cover essays for Newsweek. Terry critiqued Meacham’s previous essay, and I’ll reflect more on this week’s essay, “It’s Not Easy Bein’ Blue.”
Shunning 'Shine Jesus Shine'
Songwriter Graham Kendrick has managed to land in the book 50 People Who Buggered-Up Britain by Quentin Letts, a parliamentary sketch writer for the Daily Mail.
Newsweek -- RIP
This post is not about Gov. Sarah Palin, even though it’s about the latest Newsweek cover story about her role in the current White House race and, should she be elected, the fall of Western Civilization.
Why are they reading the Bible?
So there are literally hundreds of stories out there about Pope Benedict XVI launching a marathon Bible reading this week. And the vast majority have the Who (The Pope), the What (marathon Bible reading session), the Where (the Vatican) and the When (right now). This Agence France-Presse story is representative. This Telegraph story was a bit better, but just touched on it.
Exiting the thriving evangelical pews?
If you’ve been following our coverage of the debates about Gov. Sarah Palin and her faith, you know that many people do not know what label to stick on her. Is she a “fundamentalist”? Is she a “Pentecostal” Christian? A “charismatic”? An off-the-rack, nondenominational, evangelical Protestant?
Mortgaging souls

I know the next Bond film Quantum of Solace is scheduled for released in November, but this weekend isn’t too early to take a light-hearted look at the possible religious faith of this womanizing, fearless secret agent thanks in large part to The Times‘ http://timesonline.typepad.com/faith/2008/04/was-james-bond.html “>Faith Central blog.
Paranormal side of the tolerance coin?
The Religion Newswriters Association is currently meeting here inside the Beltway, which guarantees that somebody, from somewhere is going to release a boatload of new information about some trends in American religion.
Religious outreach, DNC style
I’m here in St. Paul, and still processing everything from last night. I was pretty sure there was no way that the Republican National Convention could come even close to the excitement of the Democratic National Convention but last night was truly amazing. We’ll be sure to cover the coverage of the religious angles — although it’s funny that most of the fodder for religion news seemed to come from Rudy Guiliani, of all people.
