Funerals are the kinds of events when it’s hard not to get religion, to feature at least some of those quotes that talk about eternal issues and ultimate choices.
The Times finds its voice on marriage in Maryland
The political battle over same-sex marriage continues in my home state of Maryland and the New York Times recently published an appropriately blunt story looking at the biggest hurdle faced by gay-rights activists — the opposition of African-American churchgoers.
In HHS flap, media prefer politics to religion
For the second time in as many weeks, I want to highlight a discussion on media criticism that was led by CNN Reliable Sources host Howard Kurtz. I wish I could embed the video here but you’ll have to click this link to watch it. It is about 10 minutes long but it’s a fascinating discussion. I’m not saying I agree with everything in the discussion — I don’t — but it’s the type of conversation that will interest readers of GetReligion and give us some things to think on.
Frame game: Mere politics? Just birth control?
The frame game continues, with a coalition of conservative religious groups — the traditionalist wings of most major religious groups — insisting that their battle with the Obama White House is not essentially about birth control, but about religious liberty and the separation of church and state. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, of course, says the battle is about birth control and quality health care.
That missing church-state angle in NYC

Cowboy Christianity catching on?
Ghosts of Gingrich past
I like to say I hate politics, but there was something exciting about Drudge’s report on internal squabbling at ABC News. He broke the news that they were debating when to air Marianne Gingrich’s latest interview on the implosion of her marriage to Newt Gingrich, now leading in South Carolina polls. I’m not proud of it, but I have always enjoyed Marianne’s eagerness in airing the dirty laundry there. She was wronged, and she wants you to know about it, you know? This Esquire interview, as much as any other, should prep you for what to expect in tonight’s broadcast.
Tables turned as black church wins KKK battle
A story nearly made for a book or a movie made the rounds a few weeks ago, when the Associated Press reported that a black church won a court battle against the owner of a Ku Klux Klan shop.
Martin Luther and Dr. King
Today we celebrate the legacy of the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. It should be pretty hard to avoid a religion angle when discussing this holiday.
