Interesting articles, the first I have seen that go into the economics of the situations. Found them very usefull, and complete. Sometimes it seems, having a baby and becoming a mother is a religion.

Chip:

I agree. For example, the general public doesn't know that the Catholic Church frowns on getting pregnant this way as much as it frowns on avoiding getting pregnant by mechanical or homonal means.

Even some Catholics think the "pro life" principle countenances getting pregnant as much as possible, and sees these methods as praise-worthy. No - they're missing the point.

I'd be interested to know the various religious stands on artificial insemination and the like, and the reasoning behind them. Maybe that will be the next article.

[...] In this post, Elizabeth Eisenstadt Evans ponders the questions being raised in a series of New York Times articles: Anyone concerned about America’s fertility industry should ponder “21st Century Babies” being posted in installlments on the the New York Times website. Writer Stephanie Saul is doing an excellent job of revealing the moral dilemmas and, frankly, distress and suffering that may occur when potential parents decide to try in-vitro and intrauterine insemination.

It’s hard to finish the article without being aware of the suffering on all sides of some of these terrible decisions
That, to me, is one of the markers of a good story.

The real ghost in this series of stories is what do the various religions have to say about IVF, intrauterine insemination and other means of enhancing fertility?

Are wantabe parents ignoring their traditions' teaching on fertility treatments (did the Stansels, for example, consider Mormon teaching on fertility treatments before they sought intrauterine insemination)? Is the tragedy described in this article a result of seeking a procedure contrary to religous teaching in the first place? There is no way of knowing from this series of articles.
