Thank you very much for bringing back a GREAT memory. I remember reading the article for the first time after I had "discovered" War and had found October and Boy. This article help seal what I had figured about the "boys". They were FAMILY. To this day I feel that they are my "kid"
brothers who, though I've never met, have brought me back to God many times. Thank you very much for reintroducing the srticle to a new era. May many of your newer readers get as motivated by the "boys" as I have.

Thanks for sharing your history of U2. I remember the first time I heard my sister's tape of The Joshua Tree. I was probably 12 at the time and thought it was amazing. Last year I attended my second U2 concert. I have to say that I felt the Holy Spirit's presence the entire time. Yes, U2 isn't your average Christian band but they do bring me closer to the Lord when I hear their music...isn't that what all music should do.

Tmatt,

I remember "discovering" U2 in 1982 as a seminary student. It may have been from your article in "CCM" (though it wasn't called "CCM" at that point, was it?). But I can't remember. I do remember being blown away by it and going out and purchasing "Boy" as well. Cockburn I had been introduced to by a friend a couple years earlier and was well on my way to collecting everything he had at the time on vinyl "cutouts" at the local Turtles Record stores (I still have them all, BTW). "Truth Decay" is the one T-Bone Burnett LP I have. While I may not always (rarely?) agree with their political stands, I've always enjoyed the music and the passion expressed in it. I was just listening to a bunch of Cockburn the other day, direct off my computer playing through my hi-fi system.

1982 - Was that *really* 25 years ago?

Terry writes: "I also made Bono a tape to introduce him to the music of Bruce Cockburn (the "Humans" album, plus some other tracks) and T-Bone Burnett ("Truth Decay" and he was knocked out by both guys. He still is, I would wager."

When I first heard the following lyrics from Bruce Cockburn's "Mystery" (from his 2006 album Life Short Call Now)

http://www.cockburnproject.net/songs&music/mystery.html

Infinity always gives me vertigo
Vertigo
Vertigo
Infinity always gives me vertigo
And fills me up with grace

...I immediately thought of U2's song, Vertigo. Was this a nod from Bruce to U2? I wonder. U2 gave a nod to Bruce on "God Part II":

http://www.assistnews.net/Stories/2005/s05120086.htm

10. From "God Part II": "Heard a singer on the radio/Late last night/Says he's gonna kick the darkness/Til it bleeds daylight./I, I believe in love." Who's the singer Bono is referring to?

Answer:

10. Bruce Cockburn, who sings on "Lovers in a Dangerous Time": "When you're lovers in a dangerous time/Sometimes you're made to feel as if your love's a crime/But nothing worth having comes without some kind of fight/Got to kick at the darkness 'til it bleeds daylight/When you're lovers in a dangerous time"--from the album, Stealing Fire (1984) http://cockburnproject.net/songs&music/liadt.html
